Lake Como ferry or private boat tour: which one is right for you?

The public ferries on Lake Como are a transport service. They link the villages on a timetable, stop at every landing on the route and are the cheapest way to move from one town to another. If your plan is to spend the day walking around Bellagio or Varenna, a ferry ticket does the job.

A private boat tour answers a different question: what does the lake look like from the water, at your own pace? There is no timetable to follow and no other passengers. The skipper slows down in front of the villas, goes close to the shore where the ferries cannot, and stops where you want to take photographs. The route is built around the time you have.

Crowds are the biggest practical difference in summer. On busy days the central ferries are full, queues form at Bellagio and Varenna, and seats with a view go quickly. On a private boat the deck belongs to your group, from two people up to eleven guests plus the skipper.

On cost, compare per group, not per person. A ferry ticket is priced per passenger; a private tour is priced per boat. For a couple the ferry is clearly cheaper. For a family or a group of friends sharing one boat, the difference shrinks, and you get a guided route, an open deck and no waiting in exchange.

Many visitors combine the two: a private tour from Como to see the villa shoreline, Nesso and the centre of the lake, then the ferry on another day to explore a village on foot. If you only have one day, the private boat shows more of the lake in less time.
